External factors such as pollution, water (especially hard or chlorinated water), harsh cosmetics, and hormonal changes can disrupt the pH balance of the skin’s acid mantle-a thin, protective layer composed of sebum (oily secretions) and sweat. This mantle, typically maintained at a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, helps prevent transepidermal water loss and protects the skin from external aggressors.
The outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, is composed of layers of keratinocytes that originate in the deeper layers and gradually migrate toward the surface, where they are naturally shed in a process called desquamation.
In the stratum granulosum (a deeper layer of the epidermis), enzymes help produce critical lipids like ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids, which play a key role in forming the skin barrier and retaining moisture. Higher up in the epidermis, enzymes such as serine proteases help break down corneodesmosomes (the bonds between corneocytes), allowing for natural cell shedding. These enzymes are pH-dependent. If the skin’s pH is too high or too low, enzyme activity can be disrupted, leading to dry, flaky skin or excess oil.
Maintaining the skin’s natural pH is therefore essential for healthy cell turnover, lipid production, and overall skin balance. It also protects the skin’s microbiome by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria and ensures a strong, resilient barrier.
