Acne and open pores

Maintaining an acidic pH is essential for balanced, acne-free skin. Inflammation without visible pimples is not always sensitivity—it can be subclinical acne. Avoiding the wrong products is just as important as choosing the right treatment. The key is to balance the pH, reduce bacteria, and calm the skin without clogging it.

How to treat enlarged pores and acne?
Acne is a complex skin condition, primarily caused by the proliferation of bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes in a favorable environment: clogged pores, excess sebum, and an altered surface pH. Under ideal conditions, the skin maintains a slightly acidic pH (between 4.5 and 5.5), which limits bacterial growth. However, when the pH becomes more alkaline—due to harsh cleansers or inappropriate products—the skin loses its natural defense, allowing bacteria to multiply.

These bacteria release porphyrins, which trigger inflammation. The result is not always visible breakouts; in many cases, it shows up as redness, sensitivity, or inflammation in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin). This is often misdiagnosed: many people think they have sensitive skin, when in fact they are suffering from high pH levels and bacterial overgrowth.

As a result, they tend to use rich or oily “sensitive skin” products that worsen the condition by clogging pores and creating an even more favorable environment for acne-causing bacteria.

What’s the right treatment?

Restore the skin’s acidic pH:
Use gentle, sulfate-free cleansers with a physiological pH. Choose formulas designed to rebalance surface pH and the skin microbiome.

Control sebum production:
Ingredients like zinc PCA, salicylic acid, and PHA (polyhydroxy acids) help regulate oil and reduce the appearance of enlarged pores.

Reduce inflammation:
Actives like niacinamide, low-dose retinol, and ectoin help soothe the skin, reduce redness, and improve texture.

Avoid occlusive or greasy textures:
Choose lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores.
